Games

Move Quietly and Tend Things is a game about a bittersweet utopia. You make and love a community set in the derelict ruins of a concrete megastructure in Southeast Asia, post-climate collapse. Play to find out why the relics washing up on shore are threatening to overturn your world.

The game is for up to 5 players and takes 2-3 hours of time. You’ll need a deck of cards, something to draw on, and something to draw with. You can download the game for free here.

Move Quietly and Tend Things has been played at festivals such as The World Transformed 2023 in Liverpool, UK, where I also spoke on a panel about the transformative impact of games; played at a festival called Games Transformed 2024 in London, UK; translated into Japanese and played by Japanese game groups; been the subject of interviews with the British Science Fiction Association; and used by organisations such as the Migrant Rights’ Network to explore the possibility of transformative games in conjunction with continued work with refugees and migrants. I have also used the game in my teaching and in workshops and conferences as part of my continued commitment to multimodal ethnography and participatory experiences that challenge conventional hierarchies.
